TURKU ARCHIPELAGO PILOT STUDY - Summer 2025

Picture
Our pilot study is currently taking place in the Turku archipelago in the Baltic Sea - a globally unique system where islands have gradually emerged from the sea since the last ice age as a consequence of postglacial rebound, and therefore they vary in age.

By studying island soil microbiomes across this archipelago, we are examining how ecological processes of connectivity shape the spatial distribution of diversity across the network (archipelago) of interconnected communities (islands). Additionally, we can capture signals of local evolution on islands of different ages - for example, we expect older islands to have more in-situ evolution.

Our pilot field study is taking place currently (summer 2025), with a rotating crew of 7-8 scientists, artists, and change makers, aboard a small sailing vessel.

Stay tuned for more updates!
